Chernobyl Anniversary

Saturday, April 28th, 2007

I got this link sent to me by a friend: Kidd of Speed. This is definitely worth a look for the chilling pictures of a nuclear wasteland left after the catasrophic failures at the Chernobyl nuclear plant.

The speed in question relates to the fact that the author of the article was passing through on a motorbike.

The whole scenario brings to mind many of the works of fiction centred on nuclear warfare, e.g Neville Shute’s “On The Beach” and also the intransigence associated with the Soviet era. Thought provoking stuff indeed.

Happy Birthday, ESB

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006

Happy Birthday ESB! I sent some snaps I’d taken of the ESB to the BBC and lo! they appeared on the BBC website (you’ll have to flip through to the last two…).

Low cloudTake a look in my NYC gallery for some more shots from the island of Manhattan. The black and white shot was another success for the Ricoh GR1 and ISO800 film…the lights of the “sports club” gym in the foreground made me smile at the time and thereafter as a few days before I’d pounded my way around all 5 Boroughs in the NYC marathon and then promptly gone on a 7 day burger-binge after the 26-mile exercise binge - hey, I earned it!

Being a well-photographed landmark there’s plenty of coffee-table books about its construction…makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I look at the pics of construction workers balancing on girders hundreds of feet up.

I’m left wondering about saying it’s an inanimate objects’s birthday…how did that get through the birth canal?
